CNC Controllers and Drive Motors

The system is controlled by a Promotion iCNC Controller capable of running a variety of CAD/CAM formats. It allows rapid accurate positioning for multiple work areas, and is equipped with automatic limit switches to prevent over travel of the gantry and Z-axis mount.

On start up the controller uses the limit switches to locate the side and end of the table. Once it does it backs off to a predetermined location and establishes the absolute zero location for the machine. It is then programed with predetermined soft limits which slow the machine as it approaches the edges of the table, in jog mode, and stops it short of the limit switches which now serve only as a secondard safety device.

The rugged drive motors are geared to provide up to 1000 inches/second repositioning speeds when it is necessary to relocate the gantry for material positioning and removal. They are spring mounted to insure full contact with the drive track, which eliminates backlash and variation in transit speed due to gear lash inherent in fixed systems. Control cables are fully shielded to prevent high frequency interference from high power and high definition plasma power supplies. Position sensing is done by resolvers which are more tolerant of noise than encoders.

The Controller is equiped with dual processors One exclusively controls the cutting operation while the second controls WindowsXP and the nesting and previewing window. This allows the machine to cut a program without interuption while the next set of parts are being loaded and nested. Included in the software package are many basic shapes that are regularly used in manufacturing and basic replications. Also included is a fully capable copy of ProMotion Nest which can add and change pierce points, nest pieces and change the cut order.
